Dyed Elm Bowl: Elm, spirit dye.

4 ¼" D x 1 ½" H

$ 120

The intricate, almost Moire-like grain pattern on these Elm bowls is the result of interlocking grain. Unlike with most trees, the grain lines of Elm trees are not parallel to the center (pith) of the tree. Rather, they spiral around the tree as it grows. Moreover, the direction of the spiral (clockwise or counter-clockwise)can change over the lifetime of the tree. The result is a very complex and detailed pattern of grain lines, depending on the angle at which the wood is cut. Judiciously applying dyes and finishing materials can strongly accentuate the grain lines, as in these bowls.
