Homage to Maria Martinez
Ash, dye
6" H x 9" D
In a private collection
This ash bowl is reminiscent of the work of the renowned Native American Pueblo potter, Maria Martinez. Her signature style was black vessels incised with designs creating a textural difference between the smooth, reflective surface of the vessel and more matte, less reflective texture of the design. Ash has a strong, ring porous grain pattern which can be emphasized with wire brushing before the vessel is dyed. The result is a black vessel with smooth reflective surface featuring the more matte natural grain pattern of the wood.
